AMERICA MAYA FOUNDATION Philanthropy too! Jorge and Brenda Alfaro of Ajua Maya Restaurant and Ajua Weddings created the Fundación América Maya, A.C. in 2003 to aid Mayan family and children. 2007: Medical Mission Surgery Program. Brenda and Jorge arranged for a donation of laparoscopic surgery equipment along with the services of a medical mission team to train surgeons on the Riviera Maya and to offer free surgery to those in need. This Medical Mission program will officially begin in August 2007. 2006: the America Maya foundation arranges medical assistance and micro business support to the Chamula Indian community living and working in marginal positions in Playa del Carmen. Children are being treated for parasite, ear and intestinal infections and are offered free medical services by Dr. Alfredo Francisco Aguirre in Playa del Carmen. 2004: Completed a Christmas Gift program for 350 children in the Ejido side of Playa del Carmen with Mexico City’s Radio Formula, Hasbro and Mattel. 2003: Established the America Maya Mission School, which was a huge success for the Chamula Indian children who attended the first year. Unfortunately, the school had to close due to lack of funding and a 50% increase in rent for the school property. All the children who attended the America Maya Mission School are continuing their education in public school. In the future, we would like to begin another Learning and Cultural Center for children who have no birth certificates and, because of this, cannot attend Mexican public or private school. You can support the medical and economic development programs by donating funds to provide lasting opportunities for Mayan children and their families. The foundation’s goal is to help the Maya preserve their culture and bring their 21st century services through education, building projects, health clinics, micro lending programs, and the creation of a Mayan Retreat and Research Center for Maya and those who wish to learn more from this noble culture.
